earch and rescue workers managed to save seven sailors from two separate accidents in the Malacca Strait off Dumai city, Riau, but four others are still missing after the passing of the rare and deadly Senyar tropical cyclone.
Dumai Search and Rescue (SAR) Unit reports said that both vessels, a cargo ship and a fishing ship, ran aground because of bad weather and high waves in the waters off Belawan, North Sumatra, and drifted into Riau territory.
“Both ships were hit by high waves causing them to run aground. They were trapped during a storm in the Malacca Strait off the coast of Belawan,” Leni Tadika, the skipper of Dumai SAR Unit's RB 218 rescue boat, said on Friday.
The victims were floating on the sea for several days before they were found and rescued by two ships heading from Singapore to Oman. The victims were then rescued and transported onboard oil tanker MV Delta Amazon and liquified natural gas (LNG) tanker MV LNG Saturn.
The rescues were then reported to the shipping authorities in Dumai. As soon as receiving the report, the Dumai SAR Unit team and Indonesian Navy personnel from the Dumai Naval Base moved to the rescuing vessels’ positions in the Malacca Strait to pick up the survivors.
“Seven crew members were found in safe condition. They included one from the fishing ship and six from the cargo ship,” Leni said.
“One survivor from the fishing ship, identified as Herpani, said he had been floating for three days before he was rescued by MV Delta Amazon.”
