uthorities have raised the alert status of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, to Level IV (the highest alert level) following a series of powerful eruptions on Tuesday and Wednesday that sent ash columns soaring up to 10 kilometers into the sky.
The first major eruption occurred at 11:37 p.m. on Tuesday, spewing a thick gray ash column 9 km high, which drifted toward the southwest, west and northwest, according to the Mount Lewotobi Volcano Monitoring Post (PGA).
“The eruption was recorded with a maximum amplitude of 47.3 millimeters and lasted for 4 minutes and 5 seconds,” said Kornelis Missa, a PGA officer at Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki, as quoted by Kompas.com.
The 1,584-meter-high volcano erupted again at 1:35 a.m. on Wednesday, sending an ash column 10 km above the summit. The eruption had the same maximum amplitude of 47.3 mm and lasted for 9 minutes and 6 seconds.
A third eruption followed at 9:21 a.m., with ash clouds rising 8 km into the sky. It recorded the same amplitude and lasted 3 minutes and 1 second.

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) raised the alert level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki to the highest level late on Tuesday, after detecting a rise in deep volcanic quakes, often a precursor to explosive eruptions.
