The seven-day rolling average in Tokyo, which has been under the latest COVID-19 state of emergency for nearly two months, stood at 2,414 per day, down 34.9 percent from the previous week. The number of coronavirus patients with severe symptoms increased by three from the previous day to 267.

Tokyo saw over 125,600 new coronavirus cases in August, almost triple the previous monthly record infections logged in July.
While new infections have been decreasing in some areas, the country is still struggling to contain surging coronavirus infections and the strain they impose on the medical system in many others.
