he government’s initiative to introduce Kurikulum Merdeka (Independent Curriculum) reflects a commendable forethought for education reform. The focus on empowering teachers and schools has laid the foundation for a learning environment where creativity and independence are at the forefront.

However, the stark reality presented by the results of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) cannot be overlooked. The graph illustrating student performance in critical areas such as reading, mathematics and science reveals a concerning trend, particularly in mathematics, where scores have noticeably declined from 2006 to 2022.

This suggests that, in spite of the government's best efforts and the innovative principles of the Merdeka Curriculum, there are underlying challenges that must be addressed to translate these education reforms into tangible improvements in student performance.

Acknowledging the essential bond between teachers and students, we must question whether our educators are truly attuned to their fundamental mission. The advanced structures of education are, after all, built on this core relationship.

In seeking more profound understanding, I turn to the Javanese-influenced teachings of Sosrokartono, an elder brother of national heroine Kartini. His cultural insights may provide the necessary depth to reinvigorate the spirit and purpose of our educational endeavors.

In the journey of education is a transformative stage where the roles of students and teachers evolve, creating a space of collective learning and teaching. Sosrokartono describes this in The Teacher, highlighting the importance of a true educator's character in guiding both the theoretical and practical facets of “science” and “action”.
