Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej passed away, Thailand's Royal Household Bureau announced.

The bureau announced that His Majesty passed away at 3:52 p.m. at the age of 88.

King Bhumibol has been hospitalized for years.

The bureau said in the statement that King Bhumibol has been admitted to the Siriraj Hospital since Oct. 3 2014 and the doctors have been providing treatment to His Majesty to their full efforts.

"But His Majesty's condition gradually worsened until His Majesty passed away at 3:52 pm at the Siriraj Hospital peacefully. He was 88 years and has been on the throne for 70 years.

Earlier, social media timelines in Thailand have gone entirely pink since Wednesday night after the 38th Royal Household Bureau statement announced that the health condition of King Bhumibol was still unstable as the revered monarch was still suffering from falling blood pressure, a rapid pulse and a high level of acidosis.

Thai social media users frequently express their best wishes and pay respect to the King using their social media statuses and timelines whenever a statement is released.

Since the announcement, many people have changed their profiles to display the wording "We love the King" on a pink background, with a template allowing them to change the word "we" to their own names.

People have created a lot of templates with many different names to let people choose their own profile photo and many more links for customized templates have been released.

Among the most commonly used templates feature pink-colored pictures with the drawings and photos of the King and the words "Long Live the King" and "We love the King", which many have used for their Facebook profile photos.

In real time, people have been showing their eminent respect for the King through via their social media timelines, turning the Internet pink overnight. (evi)
