“President Jokowi expresses his congratulations on the inauguration of Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin,” presidential spokesperson Fadjroel Rachman tweeted on Sunday.

Insyaallah [God willing], [he will] fulfill his mandate and be successful. May [God] continue to bless the good relationship between Indonesia and Malaysia, two countries that share the same roots."

Muhyiddin, a former interior minister, came into power following the collapse of the previous government, headed by ex-leader Mahathir Mohamad.

Muhyiddin's coalition includes the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), the party of disgraced former prime minister Najib Razak, as well as a hardline group that wants tougher Islamic laws.

Mahathir has slammed the appointment as illegal and insisted that Muhyiddin did not have the support of most of the country’s 222 members of Parliament. (kmt)
