President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo says he will talk to Brunei Darussalam's Sultan Hassanal Boliah on a plan to hold an ASEAN high-level meeting on the crisis in Myanmar.
resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has called for an ASEAN leaders’ summit to discuss the Myanmar situation amid frustration over the bloc’s limited response to the country’s political crisis.
In a statement on Friday, the President said Indonesia urged all stakeholders to push for an immediate dialog and reconciliation to restore democracy, peace and stability in Myanmar.
“I will immediately talk with Brunei Darussalam’s Sultan [Hassanal Bolkiah] as the current ASEAN chair on holding an ASEAN high-level meeting on Myanmar’s crisis,” Jokowi said in a video uploaded to the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube channel.
He also urged all parties to refrain from violence in Myanmar to prevent further casualties. Various reports revealed that more than 200 people have been killed during weeks of unrest in the country.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Teuku Faizasyah told The Jakarta Post on Friday that Indonesian officials were discussing the meeting with their counterparts from Brunei, although they had yet to agree on a specific timeline.
