Singapore's health ministry reported 2,236 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, the highest since the beginning of the pandemic.

A recent rise in cases after the relaxation of some COVID-19 measures has prompted Singapore to pause further reopening. More than 80 percent of its population has been vaccinated against COVID-19.

From this week, Singapore tightened some COVID-19 curbs such as limiting social gatherings to two people and making work from home a default.

Earlier on Monday, the United States raised its COVID-19 travel advisory levels for Singapore and Hong Kong, urging those who are unvaccinated to avoid non-essential travel.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) adjusted its advisory for Singapore by one rung to Level 3, which indicates a “high level of COVID-19”.

"Because of the current situation in Singapore, all travellers may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants," said the US' health protection agency, quoted by Channel News Asia.

The CDC also recommended that individuals be fully vaccinated before travelling to Singapore, and that they should follow the country's recommendations or requirements, including wearing a mask and observing safe distancing measures.

The US Department of State issued a similar notice on Monday, urging people to “reconsider travel” to Singapore due to COVID-19.
