Singapore reports highest single-day rise in COVID-19 cases on Wednesday

A recent spike in infections after the relaxation of some restrictions has prompted Singapore to pause further reopening. It also tightened curbs from last week that limited social gatherings to two people and made work from home a default.

span class="highlight" data-qa-component="highlight-text">Singapore's health ministry reported 3,577 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, the highest since the beginning of the pandemic, while it recorded three new deaths from the disease.

The fatalities involved Singaporean women aged between 68 and 102. All of them were unvaccinated against COVID-19 and had various underlying medical conditions, CNA reported.

Among the new cases, 3,562 are locally transmitted, comprising 2,932 cases in the community and 630 in migrant worker dormitories.

Fifteen are imported cases, said the ministry of health in its daily update on Wednesday.

More than 80 percent of Singapore's population has been vaccinated against the virus.
