Terror convict and firebrand cleric Abu Bakar Ba’asyir, who was closely linked to the 2002 Bali bombings, attended a flag-raising Independence Day ceremony on Wednesday at Al-Mukmin Ngruki Islamic boarding school, which he once supervised, in Sukoharjo, Central Java.
Abu Bakar Bashir was jailed in 2011 for links to militant training camps in the Indonesian province of Aceh. He is considered the spiritual leader of the al Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiah (JI) network, which was accused of orchestrating the bombings of nightclubs on the holiday island of Bali.
Counter-terrorism police also arrested at least four other suspects linked to Para Wijayanto, who experts say was a student of Abu Bakar Basyir, accused of being the mastermind of the 2002 Bali bombings that killed more than 200 people.
Noim was picked up by his family, including his sister, wife and children. Before exiting the penitentiary, he was seen exchanging words with prison officials and other law enforcers, including ones from the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT).
Ba’asyir’s family, clerics and students of Al Mukmin pesantren (Islamic boarding school) in Ngruki, Central Java, had prepared a celebration to welcome Ba’asyir. A big tent had been set up on Tuesday as they were expecting Ba’asyir to arrive on Wednesday afternoon. They had sent out invitations.
