After first erupting in Jakarta, anti-Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama sentiment has spread to other cities amid an extensive social media campaign against the governor, who recently made a statement that many Muslims considered had insulted the Quran.
Despite the fact that Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Thahaja Purnama has apologized for statements made regarding the Quranic verse al-Maidah 51, some Islamic groups are saying that an apology is not enough. Protestors demanded that Ahok be criminalized in a rally last week in Jakarta.
Political analyst from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) Siti Zuhro suggested that Jakarta Governor Basuki "Ahok" Tjahaja Purnama stop commenting on matters outside of his area of knowledge following protests from several hard-line groups who accuse him of religious defamation.
