View all search resultsThe Jakarta administration has cancelled a monthly religious event that planned to feature preacher Felix Siauw, a supporter of the banned Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI), at Fatahillah Mosque inside the City Hall complex on Wednesday.
Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) is one of the leading radical organizations in Indonesia. While the ban was supported by some within Indonesia, others have argued that this measure limits freedom of speech in Indonesia and hence is viewed as an attempt by the government to silence dissent. #insight
Since the 2014 election, Jokowi has been plagued by allegations that he is a sympathizer of the long-banned Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) and insinuations that he is anti-Islam, secretly a Christian, and would disband the Religious Affairs Ministry and put a stop to other religious organizations and traditions.
HTI filed the petition to the Supreme Court after its petition filed to challenge the government’s instruction to revoke HTI's legal entity status was rejected by the Jakarta State Administrative Court (PTUN) in May last year.
West Java Police have named three suspects from the incident. Two are the alleged flag burners, while the third is the one who allegedly raised the flag at the event. The government said there is no need for Muslims to hold more protests.
