Coinciding with World Health Day, the Healthcare and Social Security Agency (BPJS Kesehatan) has announced that close to 270 million people, nearly the country’s whole population, have been enrolled in the National Health Insurance (JKN) program.
In a sign that the government is ready to move beyond the pandemic toward developing the health sector, people must start footing their own bills for COVID-19 treatment and vaccination on Sept. 1, whether independently or through insurance.
BPJS Kesehatan has started a trial run to eliminate the three-tiered health service system in its National Health Insurance (JKN) program, but some are concerned that this could result in downgraded services across all three classes.
The government is now requiring applicants to have active policies in the supposedly universal health insurance scheme in order to access a range of public services, from legally selling and buying land to applying for a driving license, in its bid to sign up as many new policyholders as possible.
