The Jakarta Corruption Court sentenced former communications and information minister Johnny G. Plate to 15 years in prison on Wednesday for accepting kickbacks worth billions of rupiah from inflated procurement contracts for a government 4G telephony project.
The former Papua governor is also ordered to pay a fine of Rp 500 million (US$31,500), Rp 19.6 billion in restitution fees and sentenced to the revocation of his political right to be elected for five years after finishing his prison term.
Djoko Soegiarto Tjandra, once a fugitive implicated in the Bank Bali corruption case, said that he had negotiated with businessman Tommy Sumardi to arrange for his return to Indonesia, with Tommy initially asking for Rp 15 billion.
Prosecutors at the Jakarta Corruption Court accused Tommy of allegedly acting as a middleman between Djoko and two police generals, who reportedly received approximately Rp 8.3 billion (US$566,456) in bribes for assisting the graft convict evade capture while he was still on the run.
Prosecutors have sought sentences ranging from 18 years to life in prison for former executives of state insurer PT Asuransi Jiwasraya for their alleged involvement in graft and money laundering that has resulted in trillions of rupiah in state losses.
