T

he former president director of state energy company Pertamina, Karen Galaila Agustiawan, is considering appealing a nine-year prison sentence she was given by a court in a case pertaining to the purchase of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from 2001 to 2021.

On Monday, a panel of judges with the Jakarta Corruption Court found Karen guilty of corruption related to LNG purchases from United States-based firm Corpus Christi Liquefaction, which reportedly resulted in Rp 1.8 trillion (US$109 million) in state losses, Antara reported.

In addition to the nine-year prison sentence, the bench ordered her to pay a Rp 500 million fine.

The sentence was less than the 11 years behind bars demanded by Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutors.

Prosecutors argued that Karen, who headed the firm from 2009 to 2014, illicitly obtained Rp 1 billion and $104,016, and caused the American firm to gain an unwarranted $113 million, as a result of her decision to import LNG through several companies abroad. The decision was made to prevent an LNG deficit in Indonesia that had been forecast to occur between 2009 and 2040.
