Jayawijaya regency, the capital of Papua Highlands province, has declared a state of emergency following days of torrential rain that have inundated close to two dozen districts in what has been described as the worst flood that has hit the regency in years.
Puncak Jayawijaya, located in the Jayawijaya Mountains in Papua, is known for being the only place in Indonesia with snow. However, the BMKG says the “everlasting” snow could soon be a thing of the past.
The violence that occurred on Sept. 23 saw mobs, reportedly comprising native Papuans, setting hundreds of buildings, houses and cars on fire and violently attacking residents. Thirty-three people, mostly non-natives, were killed during the riots, sparking concerns of communal violence.
