Jayawijaya Regent Athenius Munib said that access to several inundated areas remains severely limited due to difficult terrain. He added that some districts can only be reached via speedboat, complicating efforts to gather data and distribute assistance.
housands of families have been affected as flooding continues to spread across Jayawijaya Regency, where 24 of the region’s 40 districts have remained submerged under 20 to 40 centimeters of water since Friday.
According to National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesperson Abdul Muhari, the affected areas include Asotipo, Asolokobal, Wesaput and Hubikiak, with Wamena, the administrative center of Jayawijaya, among the worst hit towns.
“Around 3,000 families have been impacted, but only 44 households in Wesaput District have been evacuated. Most residents have chosen to remain in their homes,” Muhari said on Monday, as reported by Antaranews.
No injuries or fatalities have been reported so far.
Abdul said the prolonged flooding has damaged residential areas and farmland, destroying at least one school building.
“We are still in the process of assessing the number of people affected and the full extent of material losses,” he said.
The flooding in Jayawijaya was triggered by continuous heavy rainfall from April 10 to 25, which caused the Baliem River to overflow, resulting in what officials have described as the worst flooding the regency has experienced in years.
