View all search resultsMemorandum of understanding (MOU) documents on economic cooperation were signed in Jakarta on Tuesday during a business forum held as part of a four-day state visit by Dutch King Willem-Alexander and high-ranking Dutch officials.
After more than 70 years, it is undeniable that the bond between the two countries has had its share of challenges. While we cannot deny the past of Indonesia-Netherlands relations, we can choose to fully capitalize on the potential of future cooperation for the benefit of both nations.
Dutch King Willem-Alexander offered his condolences regarding a speedboat collision at the Sebangau River in Central Kalimantan involving members of an advance team preparing for the Dutch royal visit that resulted in seven deaths.
We welcome the king and queen of the Netherlands who are visiting Indonesia from Monday to Friday. Their entourage includes four Cabinet ministers and 130 businesspeople. Clearly, the state visit also aims to promote business relationships between the two countries. There are, however, individuals in Indonesia who oppose the state visit, demanding that the Netherlands should first recognize Aug. 17, 1945, as the date Indonesia proclaimed its independence from its colonial rule.
All nations all over the world have recognized that Indonesia became a fully independent nation on Aug. 17, 1945. The Dutch will become a laughing stock if they stubbornly insist that their former colony freed itself from colonization on Dec. 27, 1949.
