“It would be wrong to say that the Papuan people have asked for the TNI and National Police to be withdrawn from the region, those who say that are armed criminal groups,” Mahfud said. “The Papuan people themselves are asking for protection that can provide security for them.”
The appointment, stipulated in Presidential Decree No. 54/M/2020 on the dismissal and appointment of Kompolnas members issued on Aug. 11, also saw several other state officials, law enforcement experts and public figures taking up various posts within the state body.
In the video, apparently recorded inside a Bandung Police jail, Ferdian and two of his friends who had also been arrested for their part in the prank were stripped to their underwear and told to do physical exercises such as push-ups and squat jumps by their fellow detainees.
Opinions are divided on the increasing appointment of active and retired police officers to top positions in the bureaucracy, which seems to indicate the National Police's growing influence on national politics.
The recent shooting incident in Bomou village, Tigi district, Deiyai, Papua, that killed civilian Yulius Pigai, 28, has drawn attention of the National Police Commission (Kompolnas), in which the institution promises it will monitor the legal process of the case.
National Police Commission (Kompolnas) member Bekto Suprapto said the involvement of the Indonesian Military (TNI) in efforts to combat terrorism, that would be included in the 2003 Terrorism Law under a draft revision currently under deliberation by the House of Representatives, could be unconstitutional.
