resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has named Coordinating Legal, Political and Security Affairs Minister Mahfud MD chairperson of the National Police Commission (Kompolnas) for the 2020-2024 term.
The appointment, stipulated in Presidential Decree No. 54/M/2020 on the dismissal and appointment of Kompolnas members issued on Aug. 11, also saw several other state officials, law enforcement experts and public figures taking up various posts within the state body.
Kompolnas members will be tasked with assisting the President in determining the direction of the National Police, as well as providing input regarding the appointment and dismissal of the police chief, according to a written statement issued by the Presidential Secretariat Press Bureau on Wednesday.
“All Kompolnas members were elected by the Selection Panel helmed by Suparman Marzuki,” the statement read.
Suparman chaired the Judicial Commission from 2013 to 2015.
Home Minister Tito Karnavian – who previously served as National Police chief – was appointed Kompolnas deputy chairperson, while Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly was named a member of the state body.
Other members include law enforcement experts: Benny Jozua Mamoto, formerly the National Narcotics Agency’s (BNN) deputy chief for drug eradication; Pudji Hartanto Iskandar, formerly the Transportation Ministry's director general for land transportation; and Albertus Wahyurudhanto, a lecturer at the Police Staff College (PTIK);
Several public representatives also constitute a portion of the state body – including Yusuf, a legal scholar; Mohammad Dawam, a legal expert; and Poengky Indarti, a former Kompolnas commissioner.
