Muhyiddin Yassin resigned as prime minister on Monday, along with Ismail Sabri and the rest of his cabinet, after conceding he had lost his majority in parliament. He remains caretaker premier until a successor is named.
Muhyiddin's hand had been weakened by months of infighting in his coalition and it is unclear if the developments will ease Malaysia's political crisis after a tumultuous 17 months in office for the prime minister.
Muhyiddin expressed his decision to quit during a meeting with leaders from his party, Bersatu, minister in the Prime Minister's Department Mohamad Redzuan Mohamad Yusof was quoted as saying by online news portal Malaysiakini.
