View all search resultsMuhyiddin has been under mounting pressure to quit after Malaysia's king last week issued a rare rebuke of a government move to revoke emergency laws without his approval, an act the palace said ran counter to the constitution.
Muhyiddin cited the detection of COVID-19 infections for postponing the final parliamentary session scheduled for Monday, but the opposition called it a politically motivated move to block any challenges to his leadership.
The king expressed his "regret," the Comptroller of the Royal Household Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said in a statement, that the government announced the annulment of all six of the emergency ordinances before the king consented.
The United Malays National Organization, the largest party in the National Alliance ruling coalition, plunged the country into another round of political uncertainty when it announced early Thursday morning, after a marathon meeting of its top leadership, it was ending its backing for Muhyiddin.
