The government is providing a Rp 15 million (US$886.79) incentive to medical specialists, Rp 10 million to physicians and dentists, Rp 7.5 million to nurses and Rp 5 million to other medical staff members, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said.
Other provisions in the decree involve faster and more efficient replenishment of rapidly-depleting medical supplies, including protective gear, to ensure that the needs of health workers on the frontlines are promptly met.
A hospital crisis looms as reports indicate that the combined capacity of the 132 referral hospitals designated to treat COVID-19 patients is far from adequate. Protective gear for medical workers is in short supply in both referral and regular hospitals across the country.
“We only gathered to pray together, listen to sermons and be closer to Allah. Local bureaucracy was apparently more scared of the coronavirus, which is a tiny organism,” Sentot Abu Thoriq, a member of the event committee, told The Jakarta Post.
