View all search resultsAt the Quad's first-ever summit meeting on Friday, Biden pitched the multilateral forum as "a vital arena" for cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, raising hopes for increasing its role in the region to address issues ranging from the coronavirus pandemic and climate change to technology and maritime security.
The leaders agreed to step up cooperation bilaterally as well as with the United States and Australia, the ministry said. The countries make up the so-called Quad, a group of major democracies that have been strengthening security ties as a counter to China's increasing influence in the region
Opposition lawmakers were also increasingly frustrated with Suga's taciturn leadership style, demanding he provide detailed answers to questions about the COVID-19 crisis and the Tokyo Olympics set to start in less than six months.
The move comes after the governors of Osaka, Kyoto and other hard-hit prefectures requested the government issue the emergency state, which gives local authorities the legal basis to place restrictions on residents' movements and businesses.
Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga described a "great sense of crisis" as he announced the measure, which begins Friday and is less strict than the harsh lockdowns seen elsewhere or even the country's first virus emergency last spring.
