View all search resultsAside from the capital relocation, the government has also set its sights on transforming four regional cities into major metropolises, namely Palembang in South Sumatra, Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan, Makassar in South Sulawesi and Denpasar in Bali.
The government has decided to relocate its capital city from Jakarta to East Kalimantan. The whole development is estimated to cost Rp 460 trillion (US$32.8 billion), of which about 20 percent is expected to be financed by the proceeds from asset optimization, particularly from property surplus in Jakarta.
Indonesia’s new capital city will only contribute an additional 0.02 of a percentage point to the country’s economic growth, and the impact will also be short lived, according to Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (Indef) research.
Luhut said the UAE government had prepared US$22.8 billion to invest in Indonesia through a sovereign wealth fund together with Japanese conglomerate SoftBank and the United States International Development Finance Corporation.
