The process of relocating Indonesia's capital city to East Kalimantan is to go on as planned despite the COVID-19 pandemic in the archipelago, the Office of the Coordinating Maritime Affairs and Investment Minister has said.
Following the announcement that the soft-groundbreaking process for the construction of the new capital might take place this July at the behest of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, four names have recently been touted as potential candidates for the leadership of the future seat of government.
The central government is expediting the establishment of regulations and a master plan for the new capital, which will be built in North Penajam Paser and Kutai Kartanegara regencies, East Kalimantan.
Jokowi said he wanted to understand what it took to develop a capital city such as Canberra as his government went ahead with a plan to relocate the nation’s capital from Jakarta to East Kalimantan.
East Kalimantan Governor Isran Noor has called on the central government to be more mindful of the lush forests covering parts of the province as Jakarta moves forward with its long-term plan to relocate the country's capital city to the region.
