resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has named four candidates, including a controversial former Jakarta governor, to lead the body responsible for relocating the capital city from Jakarta to an area in East Kalimantan.

Executive director of local pollster KedaiKOPI Kunto Adi Wibowo said that President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s decision to consider Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama as a potential candidate for the capital city authority was a result of the pair’s previous experience as the governor and vice governor of Jakarta between 2012 and 2014.

Ahok succeeded Jokowi as governor after the latter was elected president in 2014.

“Jokowi trusts Ahok, particularly after he succeeded him. Ahok was able to execute Jokowi’s ideas and implement them,” said Kunto.

He added that Jokowi might also feel the need to appoint someone he could trust as the capital relocation project was expected to be a significant part of his second-term legacy.

Jokowi will soon sign a presidential regulation (perpres) to name the CEO of the capital city relocation authority.

In addition to Ahok, Jokowi has named Research and Technology Minister Bambang Brodjonegoro, state construction firm PT Wijaya Karya president director Tumiyana and Banyuwangi Regent Azwar Anas as candidates.
