The statement comes amid circulating rumors that his administration would do so following efforts for reconciliation with the victims of the 1965 communist purge and their families.
Unfortunately, many Muslims fall to divisive propaganda without questioning the power play behind it. Support from Muslims to ban “leftist” books is especially sad; instead of upholding Islamic values they are emulating the destruction of the House of Wisdom in Baghdad in 1258 AD. They are crippling one of the most important principles in Islam, the preservation and distribution of knowledge.
The government says it will draft a recommendation on the settlement of the 1965 communist purge, combining input resulting from a government-sponsored national symposium in April and a civil coalition-initiated national symposium, which will be held in June.
The team from the National Symposium on the 1965 Tragedy is set to submit to the government their recommendations, based on detailed analysis of the communist purge, in the hope of providing closure and justice for victims and survivors.
In a historic move, the Indonesian government has for the first time organized an official event to talk about the massacre of people accused of being communist sympathizers in 1965 and 1966 to seek reconciliation for the country's dark past.
