View all search resultsThe Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has urged Fahmi Darmawansyah, a suspect in a graft case centered on a procurement project with the Maritime Security Board (Bakamla), to return to Indonesia and voluntarily come to the anti-graft body for questioning.
The recent arrest of Regional Representatives Council (DPD) speaker Irman Gusman on a bribery charge is surprising. Not simply is it to do with the amount of money accepted, Rp 100 million (US$7,600), which is considered “small” for many, but it is also linked to his perception as a politician with a clean track record, actively involved in the anti-corruption struggle.
Even though it is not the first time a leading political figure has been arrested in connection to graft, many people in Indonesia were shocked upon hearing the news of a sting operation by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) that nailed Regional Representatives Council (DPD) Speaker Irman Gusman over the weekend.
A legal and political expert has said ex-graft convicts and corruption suspects should not be allowed to run in local elections and if necessary, the government should revoke their political rights for life.
