View all search resultsThe minister announced earlier this month that Indonesia would prevent haj departures to Saudi Arabia this year, a decision that affected hundreds of thousands of would-be pilgrims in the world's most populous Muslim-majority nation.
This year's haj for Indonesians has been canceled after Religious Affairs Minister Fachrul Razi said the ongoing pandemic, as well as Saudi Arabia's indefinite suspension on haj and umrah (minor haj) trips, did not leave enough time for the government to prepare people's visas and protection measures.
Some 64,000 Indonesian pilgrims entered Saudi Arabia through the program last year. This figure has increased by 1,000 this year to roughly 65,000 pilgrims, around 30 percent of Indonesia’s total number haj participants of 215,377.
Ahead of the upcoming hajj period next year, the Health Ministry warned hajj pilgrims on Wednesday to avoid contact with camels to prevent potentially contracting Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV).
