The government is proceeding with its gradual reopening of the economy toward recovery, even as Indonesia recorded a surge in new infections on Tuesday, the day after social restrictions were eased in several regions, including the nation's capital and COVID-19 epicenter of Jakarta.
Thailand will consider a plan to reopen more businesses and establishments from as early as June 15, an official said on Wednesday, after the country has reported no local transmissions of the coronavirus in the past 16 days.
Malls and temples reopened in several cities across India on Monday despite the country recording a record daily number of new coronavirus infections, with the pandemic expected to ravage the country for weeks to come.
If Indonesia remains adamant about phasing out its restrictions in an attempt to restart the economy, focusing on building a strong containment capability is a far better option, since it is cheaper, faster, and less risky compared to playing catch-up by trying to strengthen its healthcare capacity.
