View all search resultsA fresh initiative in the House of Representatives to hold next year’s regional elections two months earlier than scheduled has sparked concern that this could be another move aimed at shoring up President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s position and retaining his widespread influence after he steps down.
The struggles of the two major parties, amid growing voter dissatisfaction over policies, candidate selection and integrity, raised the prospect of a hung parliament and period of uncertainty while a record number of postal votes are counted.
The General Elections Commission (KPU) has given assurances that counting for both the legislative and presidential elections was going well, as ballots from hundreds of thousands of polling stations across the country have started to arrive at their respective districts for recapitulation.
In the end, there were no surprises and no one pulled off an upset win. The whole thing ended the way most people expected: Incumbent President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo won a second term and Gerindra chairman Prabowo Subianto was defeated in his bid for the presidency, again. And as expected, voters behaved in an admirable way by casting their decisive votes and moving on with their holiday plans.
