ustralia's flag carrier Qantas has launched a new virtual reality (VR) app that allows travelers to interactively locate and explore the country's destinations prior to actually visiting them.

Available for iPhone, Android, Samsung Gear VR, Oculus Rift and HTV Vive devices, the app offers two modes: split screen mode for headset or Google Cardboard users and 2D landscape mode for smartphone users.

"This app aims to increase interaction with tourists by revealing parts of Australia that they never knew existed. Anyone with an iPhone or Android device can virtually tour the Kakdu National Park, for instance, and then book a flight directly from the app to see it first hand," said Qantas Group executive brand, marketing and corporate affairs Olivia Wirth in a press release on Monday.

The free-to-download app comes with 13 videos and additional content that will be added gradually in the coming weeks. Developed by Australian VR company Start VR, among the highlights are the renowned art installation Field of Light Uluru by Bruce Munro, outdoor activities in Kakdu National Park and a hot air balloon ride in Alice Springs.

Qantas introduced its first VR experience last year by conducting a trial using Samsung Gear VR headset in the cabin and First Class lounge. (kes)
