Yogyakarta is hosting the biggest art event in town called Yogyakarta Art Festival (FKY) 2017 from July 27 to August 13.

The annual event marks its 29th anniversary this year. In 2016, Sleman received the honor to host the festival and for this year, the location is set at Planet Pyramid, Jl. Parangtritis KM 5.5 Bangunharjo, Bantul.

FKY began with a parade on July 27 in Malioboro from 03:00 p.m. to 05:30 p.m. and showcased the performance of Total Perkusi featuring Dominique Naura.

The opening ceremony started at 07:00 p.m. and finished at 09:30 p.m. at Planet Pyramid and featured performances from Gamelan Sekar Wangi Ngibikan, Canden Jetis Bantul, Tari Pink Cavaleri (Pink Cavalry Dance), Katana Dance and Jogja HipHop Foundation.

FKY 2017 features several attractions such as art market, cinema, theatre, literature, Perupa Muda Exhibition (Young Artists Exhibition), shadow puppet performances, art workshops and competitions.

Cinema FKY is a program that focuses on short movies created for FKY. Perupa Muda Exhibition, on the other hand, showcases the works of 53 artists including Agapitus Ronaldo, Ahmad Oka, Harry Arafat, Iwank, Pandu Mahendra, Rudy Atjeh, dan Roy Adhitya from July 31 to August 13.

FKY was first held in 1989 alongside the opening of the Yogya Monument. At one point in history the event was held at North Keraton Square, then at Vredeburg Fort and Ngasem Market. The event usually lasts for two weeks.

FKY is said to be the pioneer of other art festivals in Yogyakarta such as Gamelan Festival, Art Jog and Yogyakarta Art Film Festival. (asw)
