ndonesia is set to host the Indonesian Golf Tour (IGT) – Professional Golf of Malaysia (PGM) Championship 2017 on Sept. 5-7 slated at the Riverside Golf Club in Bogor, West Java.

The event, which will bring together teams from both countries, was previously held for the first time in Malaysia last year.

This year’s IGT – PGM Championship is said to use the match play format instead of the stroke play format implemented last year.

“Stroke play is not as interesting as match play that is used in the Ryder Cup, where there are only two opponents competing with each other. The match play format offers more excitement to the competition and also brings out the best in every team,” said Indonesian Golf Tour head Jimmy Masrin.

Both Malaysia and Indonesia will send 12 athletes from each team, of which eight are selected from the list of Order of Merit from each tour while the other four are the captain’s picks.

The Indonesian team will be lead by Jubilant “Teddy” Arda, who led the national team when they won two gold medals for women’s individual and group and two silver medals for men’s individual and group categories at the SEA Games 2011.

The total prize for this championship is Rp 600 million (US$45,000). The winner will get 65 percent of the prize while the losing team will get 35 percent.

On a separate occasion, Tourism Minister Arief Yahya said Indonesia is haven for golfers. “Which is why golf can be developed into sport tourism […] Golf is similar to yacht tourism, both have communities all over the world. Their target market is middle-upper class people and they have strong presence in countries such as Japan, Korea, Singapore and Malaysia,” said Arief. (kes)
