outh Sumatra is planning to build Tourist Information Center (TIC) in several locations to facilitate the upcoming Asian games 2018. “The TIC will be built soon, hopefully, it will be finalized by the end of this year and ready for 2018,” said the South Sumatra culture and tourism department head, Irene Camelyn Sinaga.
The TIC will be located in several strategic locations such as Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Airport, Kuto Besak Castle and Jakabaring Sports City (JSC).
“Apart from TIC Mobile, there will be food trucks occupying the 360 hectares area of JSC,” Irene added. The TIC development will be supervised by the South Sumatra Province, Tourism Ministry and several entrepreneurs.
“The construction will be handled by the provincial administration or business owners while Tourism Ministry will be in charge of media and content,” explained the ministry's special staff for Infrastructure, Judi Rifajantoro.

Jakarta, which is also the host of Asian Games 2018, will also have a TIC installed at the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and will be supervised by state-owned airport operator Angkasa Pura II.
“All TIC services at the airport is for free, including food and beverages from sponsors,” Judi said, adding that there are three main things to pay attention to when it comes to developing the TIC: Location, human resources and content.
“South Sumatra has plenty of qualified human resources as there are 600 students of tourism Polytechnic who are able to speak foreign languages,” Judi said.
For Tourism Minister Arief Yahya, the TIC is a necessity in South Sumatra since Asian Games 2018 will be held there. “Other than being a tourism information center, the TIC also helps in promoting tourism in Indonesia, especially South Sumatra tourism,” Arief said.
In the future, the TIC could even become a tourism center where “International tourists can get information on tourist attractions, transportation, accommodation and others. They can also make direct reservation and payment there,” Arief added. (asw)
