Gamplong hamlet in the southwest part of Slmean regency is known as a handicraft tourist village.

Gamplong is popular for producing bags, baskets, lampshades, wallets, tissue boxes, necklaces, curtains and others that are made of natural materials like fimbristylis umbellaris and common water hyacinth plants.

“The income from these handicraft products can reach up to Rp 310 million per month or about Rp 3.7 billion per year,” said the head of Gamplong Tourist Village, Giyono.

All of the craftsmen and craftswomen in the village are part of Paguyuban (community) Tegar.

“In 2015, there were 3,115 visitors [who came to Gamplong]; in 2016 there were 4,410 people and for this year, up until October there were 4,383. This year we will welcome more visitors than in 2016,” he added.

There are 225 rooms and 185 houses available for visitors to stay at the village.

Additionally, the place also offers tour packages for students, namely Kindergarten – Elementary outbound package for 10 students at Rp 250,000 (US$18.50), Middle School – High School package for 10 students at Rp 350,000 and College Students / Public package for 10 people at Rp 450,000.

Apart from shopping, visitors can learn how to make a photo frame and pencil case or try weaving.

Gamplong has been known for its handicraft products since 1950. In 1970 it was famous for producing towel, napkins and tablecloth and in 1998, plant-based materials were introduced.

Moreover, film director Hanung Bramantyo is currently building a studio in Gamplong, which is expected to operate in 2018. (kes)
