ollowing the reopening of Mt. Semeru's hiking trail last Wednesday, local and foreign visitors could be seen flocking the area around the gate leading to the trail at Ranu Pane village in Lumajang, East Java.

The hiking trail up Mt. Semeru had been closed earlier this year for ecosystem restoration efforts.

Now the trail is open again, but no more than 600 people a day are permitted to climb the 3,676-meter mountain. Visitors are encouraged to register online to secure a place.

Budi Mulyanto from the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) Area 2 division told Antara that visitors were also barred from ascending to Mahameru Peak. "The safe hiking zone is only until Kalimati; hence hikers are not allowed to climb all the way to the peak of Semeru," he said.

Budi said the mountain had been reopened to the public after park authorities had conducted a survey and cleared the trail of fallen trees or landslides. Park rangers have also prepared facilities along the track, including unobtrusive direction signs.

"We encourage climbers to use common sense and obey our recommendations," said Budi, adding that visitors should also use the official hiking trail to avoid getting lost. (kes)
