16 AirAsia flights to, from Yogyakarta cancelled following volcano eruption

The temporary closure of the runway at Adisutjipto International Airport in Yogyakarta saw several aircraft held on ground, one return to its airport of origin (Jakarta) and more than 20 flights cancelled.

A

disutjipto International Airport in Yogyakarta closed its runways from 10:25 a.m. to 11:10 a.m. and from 11:40 a.m. to 2:17 p.m. on Friday. The closures were prompted by a phreatic eruption of Mount Merapi at 7:40 a.m., which produced volcanic ash.

The airport resumed flight operations at 2:17 p.m. PT Angkasa Pura I Adisutjipto International Airport general manager Agus Pandu Purnama said it was mandatory to clear the (airport) area to ensure the safety of all flights.

The runway closure saw several aircraft held on ground, one return to its airport of origin (Jakarta) and more than 20 flights cancelled.

The following 16 AirAsia flights were among those cancelled:

2. QZ 7557 JOG-CGK

3. QZ 7550 CGK-JOG

4. QZ 7551 JOG-CGK

5. QZ 7552 CGK-JOG

6. QZ 7553 JOG-CGK

7. QZ 8440 DPS-JOG

8. QZ 8449 JOG-DPS

9. QZ 7554 CGK-JOG

10. QZ 7555 JOG-CGK

11. QZ 8074 KNO-JOG

12. QZ 8075 JOG-KNO

13. AK 346 KUL-JOG

14. AK 347 JOG-KUL

15. AK 348 KUL-JOG

16. AK 349 JOG-KUL

At the time of writing, operations were back to normal. Agus said the airport would remain alert and closely communicate post-closure activities and services for passengers at the airport. (mut)
