hinese President Xi Jinping congratulated South Korean President-elect Yoon Suk Yeol on his election win in a message on Friday, with Yoon responding that he is "sure" of a further improvement in bilateral ties.

In the statement read by Chinese Ambassador to South Korea Xing Haiming in a meeting in Seoul, the Chinese leader said Beijing is willing to "accelerate stable and long-term improvement" in China-South Korea ties as "strategic cooperation partners."

Xi also called the two countries "close neighbors and important cooperation partners."

Yoon welcomed the message saying that it has been 30 years since Seoul and Beijing established diplomatic ties, and those years have been very helpful to both countries, especially economically.

"I am very sure that the South Korea-China relationship will further improve," Yoon added.

As the conservative camp candidate, Yoon pledged closer ties with the United States, South Korea's sole defense ally. At a post-election press conference on Thursday, he said he intends to develop Seoul's relationship with Beijing built on mutual respect.

The former top prosecutor defeated the ruling Democratic Party candidate in Wednesday's election by a narrow margin, wresting power away from the progressive camp after five years. He will take office in May.
