P

resident Joko "Jokowi" Widodo took off on Friday aboard the presidential aircraft to Japan to join the Group of Seven (G7) summit, a multilateral event where the President is expected to pledge that he will amplify the voice of the global south.

"Indonesia must carry the voice of the global south, that developing nations must be heard, not only developed nations or major countries," Jokowi said in a press briefing shortly before boarding the aircraft on Friday morning.

The President also said he would communicate some of the agreements made during the ASEAN Summit in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara, with the world's major economies under the G7.

"I will talk about agreements on Myanmar for instance," Jokowi said.

In his closing statement to the ASEAN Summit, Jokowi said the grouping would not give up trying to end the violence in fellow member Myanmar even though the ruling military there had made no progress on the peace plan it agreed with the bloc two years ago.

Leaders of seven of the world's richest nations meet next week at the G7 summit in the Japanese city of Hiroshima to discuss geopolitical, economic and climate issues such as the continuing war in Ukraine and the rising tensions between China and the United States.

The G7 comprises the US, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and Japan. Representatives from the European Union also attend.
