resident-elect Prabowo Subianto arrived on Sunday in Beijing for a three-day visit in his capacity as defense minister, starting with a meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Monday afternoon.
A statement issued by the Defense Ministry on April 1 said Prabowo, accompanied by his fashion designer son Didit Hediprasetyo, landed on Sunday at Beijing Capital International Airport, where he was greeted by China's Vice Foreign Affairs Minister Su Weidong, Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia Lu Gang and defense attaché Brig. Following his meeting with Xi on Monday, Prabowo is scheduled to attend a series of meetings with officials including Prime Minister Li Qiang and his Chinese counterpart Dong Jun.
"This visit is part of a sustained effort to strengthen dialogue and strategic partnership [that is] crucial for regional stability and security," said Defense Ministry spokesperson Edwin Adrian Sumantha.
The Chinese foreign ministry issued on Friday an announcement on Prabowo’s planned visit to the country on an invitation from president Xi.
This is Prabowo’s first visit to a key trade partner since he won the 2024 presidential election.
Xi congratulated Prabowo on his election victory last month, saying he attached "great importance" to China’s relationship with Indonesia.
China is one of Indonesia’s biggest sources of foreign direct investment.
