P

alestinian Ambassador to the United Nations Riyad Mansour held a meeting on Thursday with Vice President Ma'ruf Amin during which the envoy renewed calls for a ceasefire in Gaza as Israel continues to pound the Palestinian territory in its nine-month war.

Mansour joined Cheikh Niang, Palestine’s permanent observer at the United Nations on a visit to the Vice President on Thursday to discuss the latest situation in Gaza and to thank the Indonesian government for its support for the Palestinian people currently under siege in the territory.

Earlier on Thursday, Riyad and Niang held a meeting with Foreign Minister Retno LP Marsudi and were also scheduled to meet with president-elect Prabowo Subianto.

"We have three messages to the Vice President; the importance of stopping violence and cruelty in Palestine," Riyad was quoted by Antara as saying.

In the meeting, Ma'ruf said that Indonesia would continue to support efforts to find a peaceful solution to the Gaza war.

"The Palestinian issue is very close to the heart of the Indonesian people," he said.

The war in Gaza began when Hamas gunmen burst into southern Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,200 people and taking around 250 hostages back into Gaza, Israel says.

The offensive launched by Israel in retaliation has killed nearly 38,000 people, according to the Gaza health ministry, and has left the heavily built-up coastal territory in ruins.

Egypt, Qatar and the United States have been trying for months to secure a truce and the release of 120 remaining hostages in Gaza, but their efforts have repeatedly failed.

Hamas says any deal must end the war and bring about a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. Israel says it will accept only temporary pauses in the fighting until Hamas is eradicated.
