he Indonesian Maritime Security Agency (Bakamla) has signed a contract for a patrol vessel provided through a grant from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) worth some 9 billion yen (US$57 billion).
Bakamla chief Vice Adm. Irfansyah and Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. chief executive officer Shin Ueda signed the agreement at a ceremony in Minato, Tokyo, on Dec. 27. There, Irvansyah also signed a contract with consulting firm Japan Marine Science Inc. CEO Tomoyuki Koyama.
“I am proud with the contract signings for the vessel grant, which has been planned since 2023 to maintain maritime security and safety in [Indonesian] territorial waters,” Irvansyah said, as quoted by Bakamla's official Instagram account, @bakamla_ri.
He added that the patrol vessel would be used to prevent illegal activities at sea and perform search and rescue operations.
The patrol vessel’s construction is to be completed in 2027. It is designed to be 85.6 meters in length, have a top speed of 22 knots and be operated by a crew of 70.
JICA signed the grant agreement with the government in Jakarta on March 22, 2024, to provide aid of up to 9 billion yen for the Enhancement of Ability in Maritime Safety and Security project.
The project aims to improve Bakamla’s ability to carry out maritime rescue and law enforcement quickly and effectively through the deployment of a patrol vessel.
