Muhammad Taqi Askari, a 19-year-old student at Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran, described a tense atmosphere in the Iranian capital following an Israeli air strike on June 13.
“Thank God, we are all safe this afternoon. The sound of the Iron Dome was last heard just half an hour ago,” Taqi told The Jakarta Post on Monday, referring to Israel’s air defense system.
The recent flare-up began last Friday, when Israel launched a military strike aimed at dismantling Iran’s nuclear and missile infrastructure. Iran responded with retaliatory missile attacks, and the conflict has since continued with no sign of de-escalation.
As of Tuesday, Iranian authorities reported that Israeli attacks had killed over 220 people, the majority of them civilians. Israel, in turn, reported 24 civilian fatalities, according to Reuters.
