The President has called for strict enforcement of the judicial process in a fatal police shooting that left one officer dead at a senior officer's official residence.
resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has called for due process of law following last week’s fatal shootout between two police officers at the residence of the National Police’s internal affairs chief.
“The legal process must be [followed],” Jokowi told reporters on Tuesday, on the sidelines of a visit to farmers in Subang, West Java, as reported by Kompas.
The National Police have said that police officer E, ranked second agent (Bharada), was acting in self-defense when he shot and killed fellow officer Brig. J, now identified as Nofryansah Yosua Hutabarat by Kompas, at the residence of internal affairs chief Insp. Gen. Ferdy Sambo.
National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Ahmad Ramadhan, who referred to the two officers involved only by their initials at a press briefing on Monday, said that Brig. J had drawn his firearm first and threatened Bharada E, who returned fire and killed his colleague.
Brig. J, who outranked Bharada E, had been the first to not only point his weapon but also fire it at Bharada E. “It was self-defense,” Ramadhan told reporters as quoted by Tempo.
Bharada E is a member of the police’s Mobile Brigade unit who had been assigned as an aide de camp to Insp. Gen. Ferdy Sambo, while Brig. J had been assigned as a chauffeur to Ferdy’s wife.
According to the National Police, the incident unfolded at around 5 p.m. on Friday, when Brig. J entered Ferdy’s second-floor bedroom where his wife was resting. J allegedly harassed her and pointed a pistol at her head; Ferdy’s wife screamed, which caused J to flee the room in a panic, and E responded on hearing the scream.
