Swedish company Volvo Cars announced in Beijing that it would deploy 100 cars on the busy, congested streets of China.
The experiment will give local drivers a chance to test the cars on public roads in everyday living conditions.
It's still unclear when or where the experiment be conducted but, according to a statement released on the company's website, the negotiations with interested cities in China would start in the upcoming months.
Volvo believes that autonomous driving can help reduce car accidents, alleviate congested roads, reduce pollution and allow drivers to perform other activities in a car. The company, which is wholly owned by China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, is the pioneer of self-driving technology.
"Our starting point is that both the public and private sectors stand to benefit from new technologies and industries, so it is better to build bridges and work together than to all go in different directions,” said Volvo president and chief executive Håkan Samuelsson. (kes)
