ver wish you could sit in the front row of your favorite band's concert or your team's soccer match? Thanks to virtual reality and 360-degree video, you can now enjoy those moments from the comfort of your couch.

After introducing support for 360-degree videos back in 2015, YouTube on Monday launched 360-degree live streaming and spatial audio for on-demand videos. The company has live streamed performances of select artists at California's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in 360 degrees this weekend. The new special audio feature allows fans to "listen along as they do in real life where depth, distance and intensity all play a role".

“What excites me most about 360-degree storytelling is that it lets us open up the world’s experience to everyone. Students can now experience news events in the classroom as they unfold. Travelers can experience faraway sites and explorers can deep-sea dive, all without the physical constraints of the real world,” said YouTube chief product officer Neal Mohan in a blog post.

He added that the company had been working with companies across the industry, including VideoStitch and Two Big Ears to make their software compatible with 360-degree live streams and spatial audio on YouTube and more would be available soon.

"We’ll also make 360-degree live streaming and spatial audio technologies available at all YouTube Space locations around the globe, so you can take it for a spin," he added.

Mohan also told The Verge that users did not need to do anything in order to enjoy the Live 360 content.

"Open the YouTube app on your mobile device or launch it on the web and you’re ready to go. There is no fancy technology to purchase or integrate," he said. (kes)
