Netflix announced Monday that it would stream the new Star Trek series in 188 countries, excluding the US and Canada.
Based on an international licensing agreement with US network CBS Studios International, each episode will be available globally within 24 hours of its US premiere. Additionally, all 727 existing episodes of the iconic series would also be available on Netflix by the end of 2016, AFP reported.
Dubbed Star Trek: All Access, production will begin filming in Toronto in September, and will premiere January 2017. The original Star Trek story is about a flight crew exploring the galaxy aboard the USS Enterprise spaceship. The new series is said to feature a new spaceship and new characters, among others.

Those who were involved in previous Star Trek series reportedly would make a come back, including screenwriter for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager, Bryan Fuller, who will return as co-creator, and executive producer Alex Kurtzman, who previously co-wrote and produced two of the franchise's films, Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness (2013).
The announcement comes amid growing demand for streaming video services, as Netflix says that it has about 81 million subscribers in 190 different countries, with more than half of subscribers based in the US. (tif/kes)
