Google Indonesia has displayed a Sumpah Pemuda (Youth Pledge)-themed doodle to mark Youth Pledge Day, which falls on Oct. 28.
The doodle portrays a group of men and women dressed in various traditional outfits, including Balinese, Javanese and Sundanese costumes, one of whom is waving the Red-and-White flag. The characters are seen to be chanting the three ideals promoted in the pledge: satu tanah air (one motherland), satu bangsa (one nation), satu bahasa (one language).

Youth Pledge Day commemorates the conclusion of the Second Youth Congress on Oct. 27-28, 1928, in then Batavia (Jakarta), when youth of the yet-to-be independent country expressed their wish for a nation named Indonesia and recited a pledge containing the three ideals. The national anthem Indonesia Raya was also heard for the first time at the Second Youth Congress.
Google Indonesia often displays theme-specific doodles to commemorate special days in the Indonesian calendar. In addition to the Youth Pledge-themed doodle, other examples of Google’s theme-specific artwork are the sketch of flag raisers during Independence Day and a sketch of national heroine Raden Adjeng Kartini’s portrait on Kartini’s Day, tempo.co reports.
